If you are
struggling to survive your first academic year take a deep breath and wrap the
idea around your mind that you are not the only one to feel this way. The first
academic year can be tough on all students. The transition from school to
another academic institute is hard. There is a pressure of starting fresh and
each student wants a clean slate which culminates into successful lives ahead.
In addition
to societal pressures of fitting in and belonging, studies can be a major area
of concern. At the start of something new it can all seem overwhelming but with
time it gets easier.
Tips on survival
Each student
at some point of time goes through a breakdown in the first academic year.
There are certain tips which can help you make it through without any serious
damage. The tips are as
follows:
● Plan ahead
It is very
important to plan ahead when it comes to ensuring survival of a hectic first
year. All you have to do is get a plan in place. Write down everything which
needs to done. Mark it on a calendar or use a notebook. The method you use is
irrelevant you just have to keep a note of everything to ensure that nothing is
forgotten by you. Those who are organized usually make it through without any
problems.
● Follow the plan
This is an
important thing to understand. It is not sufficient to just make a plan; the
main thing that needs to done is to follow it. If there are five papers due
make sure you write those papers because no one will do them for you. It will
seem hard at first and the change will be difficult to adjust to but that is
only for a few weeks. After you get a hang of it there will be enough
opportunities to let your hair down and relax.
● Time management is key
So many
different students who are capable and smart fall behind in class because of
lack of time management. Even here all you need to do is start or make an
effort. With time there is nothing that you cannot do. When you manage your
time there will be nothing holding you back from doing well in the semester.
● Learn to relax
A
crucial error that one needs to avoid at all costs is overworking. There are
plenty of students who undergo mental breakdowns because they overwork. You are
not the first one or the last one to deal with the stress of the first academic
year. Just breathe, relax once in a while and everything will work itself out.
● Get help
There is no
need to do everything on your own. Take help of books from the library, class
notes or the internet to help get your work done. There is nothing that is not
available in one of these sources.
With the tips
stated above managing your first academic year will be a piece of cake.
